Gabion Baskets

Yarrabee gabion baskets are a long-lasting alternative to timber sleepers and concrete retaining walls. As gabion basket suppliers in Melbourne, we supply both the baskets and the Castlemaine stone to fill them, so the whole wall comes from one place. Gabion baskets can be laid on a crushed rock or concrete base.

Gabion cages work well beyond stone retaining walls. Customers use them for garden seating, vertical gardens, outdoor fireplaces, feature walls and raised veggie patches. Filled with stone and galvanised steel, they don’t rot, warp or need repainting, and they handle constant weathering for decades.

Our gabion kits use 5mm welded, hot dip galvanised steel mesh in a 50mm x 50mm grid. On a typical 1000 x 500 x 500mm basket, that’s around 45% more steel than the wider 75mm x 75mm grid used in many baskets, which adds strength and reduces the bulging often seen in lighter cages. All edges are joined with spiral joiners that pass twice through each 50mm opening, doubling the strength of every join.

The cost of gabion retaining walls comes down to two things: the stone you choose to fill them and the complexity of the project. Baskets start from 1000 x 300 x 300mm, and we can fill them with anything from budget-friendly rock through to premium Castlemaine stone. Gabion baskets are great for these jobs

Retaining Walls

Our “dry” gabion garden retaining walls can be used to stabilise slopes and control erosion on your property, as they are long lasting and drain well. They are suitable for both residential and commercial use.

Garden Edging

We can create a gabion retaining wall design that can also be put to use as garden edging. This will help to keep your vegetable and garden beds intact, as the baskets keep their shape and are well draining.

Casual Seating

A gabion wall design can also be used to create a permanent outdoor seating option – simply add timber benches or comfortable cushions. The baskets are incredibly long lasting and keep their shape well, even when sat on regularly.
