How To Clean Granite Bench Tops

When using granite inside the home, most commonly as bench tops, you will want to keep it looking shiny and new at all times. But what is the best way to clean granite and how often should you do it?

On a daily basis, you should wipe down your granite surfaces using water that has had a few drops of dishwashing liquid added to it. Rinse out the cloth in warm water and use it to wipe off any soapy residue. If you notice any streaks or dullness, there is possibly still soap on the granite, so rinse out the cloth again and re-wipe the granite down.

Use a microfiber cloth to dust off the surface whenever you feel it needs it and, around once a week, you should wipe down your granite surfaces using a damp cloth and a specialized stone cleaner. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on granite, as this can cause scratching and pitting on the surface of the stone.

Many people panic after spotting stains on their granite bench tops, fearing that there is no way to remove them. There is, however, a simple way to draw the stains out. Mix together a poultice of powdered whiting and hydrogen peroxide (following the manufacturer’s instructions to a tee) in order to create a thick paste. Cover the stains with the paste, then cover the whole area with plastic wrap, being sure to tape the edge down. You will need to allow the paste to set, which can take up to two days, before using a sponge to wipe it away. Rinse the granite with clean water and you are ready to go.
