Which Outdoor Paving Material Is Best For You?

Your choice of outdoor paving material is one of the most important decisions for your home’s landscaping – it can add colour, texture and pattern to your garden. The most widely available materials tend to fall into two broad categories – quarried stone and composite material. We have focused on quarried stone, which is dug and then shaped by splitting, cutting or crushing.

Sandstone
There are a number of advantages to using sandstone – it’s widely available, comes in a range of colours and is easy to work with. It’s a popular choice for homes with swimming pools, as Yarrabee’s sandstone is able to tolerate salt well and provides a non-slip surface.

Slate
Two of the key advantages to using slate are that it’s highly attractive and is easy to shape, allowing you to create exactly the paved area that you desire. It comes in a variety of colours, textures and degrees of hardness –even the pieces in a single batch can differ.

Granite
This material is incredibly durable, far more so than many other stones, and comes in a huge colour range. Granite has a natural resistance to abrasion and scratching, as well as being less susceptible to staining. There is a wide price range in granite pavers from $47 per m2 up to over $80 per m2. Price variations are often due to the source of the stone, more so that quality variations. All Yarrabee granite is first quality material.

Limestone
Some of the advantages to using limestone include even colouring throughout and pavers that are easy to shape. There are only a few colour choices available, but each shade is fresh and appealing. This makes the stone a popular decision for many applications.

Bluestone
One of the more popular paving materials on the market, bluestone offers many advantages. It is a fantastic option for homes with swimming pools, as it can tolerate salt quite well and provides a non-slip surface. It can be used to add a sense of elegance to any space.

Travertine
This material is a highly attractive option that is available in a lighter colour scheme. If travertine has been tumbled, it can be a perfect choice for swimming pool coping (as the edges are softened). When left with more a of a natural unfilled surface, it’s ideal for outdoor use.

Although the great range of outdoor paving materials makes shopping and designing your landscape enjoyable, the sheer number of choices can also make it a little overwhelming. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, and some are better suited than others to specific applications and locations. By exploring your options, you can make the best possible choice.
